Caption: Sergei Leonidovich Mandelstam (1910-1990), Soviet rocket scientist, talking about his research program. Mandelstam was head of the science programme of the Intercosmos 1 mission. This was a satellite launched on 14 October 1969, ostensibly with the aim of measuring the polarisation of solar flares. It decayed from orbit ten weeks later. Photographed in October 1969.
