Caption: Andrei Severny (1913-1987), Soviet astrophysicist. Severny was a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and from 1952 he was director of its Crimean Astrophysical Laboratory. He worked in the fields of theoretical astrophysics and solar physics, discovering the phenomenon of weak stellar magnetic fields. He served as the vice-president of the International Astronomical Union from 1964 to 1970. Photographed in 1983.
