Caption: Soyuz 9 spacecraft landing. This mission launched on 1 June 1970, carrying Soviet cosmonauts Andriyan Nikolayev and Vitaly Sevastyanov into orbit. They remained in orbit for nearly 18 days, circling the Earth 288 times and breaking the previous record for time spent in space. After re-entering the atmosphere, a parachute slowed their descent and the capsule returned safely to Earth, landing 75 kilometres west of Karaganda, Kazakhstan. However, the need to exercise during prolonged stays in orbit was not fully known, and the crew were unable to walk unaided from the landing site. Photographed on 19 June 1970.
