Caption: Mirabelle bubble chamber inspection. Officials at the All-Union High Energies Physics Institute inspecting the joint Soviet-French Mirabelle liquid-hydrogen bubble chamber in 1971. Located in Serpukhov, in Russia's Moscow region, and used for particle physics research (including photon-meson interactions), this detector was one of the most advanced in the world at the time it was built and operated for over 10 years. Attached to the Protvino 70 GeV proton beam accelerator, it imaged the decay product particles as they passed through liquid hydrogen. The main inauguration ceremony was held on 15 October 1971.
