Caption: Mirabelle bubble chamber. Engineer in the interior of the joint Soviet-French Mirabelle liquid-hydrogen bubble chamber at the All-Union High Energies Physics Institute, Serpukhov, in Russia's Moscow region. Used for particle physics research (including photon-meson interactions), this detector was one of the most advanced in the world at the time it was built and operated for over 10 years. Attached to the Protvino 70 GeV proton beam accelerator, it imaged the decay product particles as they passed through liquid hydrogen. It was inaugurated in 1971. Photographed in 1984.
