Caption: Surgical demonstration. Soviet surgeon Boris Vasiljevich Petrovsky (1908-2004) demonstrating an operation in 1961 at the surgical clinic of the 1st Moscow Medical Institute, Moscow, USSR. Petrovsky was a general surgeon who specialised in cardiovascular, transplant and oesophageal surgery. In 1965, he performed the first kidney transplant in the Soviet Union. That same year, he was appointed minister of health for the Soviet Union, serving in this role until 1980. He was a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and was recognised with honorary fellowships of many national surgical organisations.
