Artificial heart research. This artificial heart system was developed by Soviet cardiac surgeon Valery Ivanovich Shumakov (1931-2008). He was appointed head of the laboratory for artificial hearts and assisted circulation at the All-Union Research Institute for Clinical and Experimental Surgery in 1966. He would later co-ordinate Soviet-American collaboration on artificial hearts for over 20 years, developing several types such as the one shown here.
