Caption: Artificial heart research. This artificial heart system was developed by Soviet cardiac surgeon Valery Ivanovich Shumakov (1931-2008). He was appointed head of the laboratory for artificial hearts and assisted circulation at the All-Union Research Institute for Clinical and Experimental Surgery in 1966. He would later co-ordinate Soviet-American collaboration on artificial hearts for over 20 years, developing several types such as the one shown here. In 1987, he performed the first heart transplant in the USSR. Photographed in 1973 at the Bakoulev Center for Cardiovascular Surgery, Moscow, Russia.
