Caption: Collagenous colitis. Light micrograph of a section through the colon (large intestine) of a patient with collagenous colitis. This disease is an inflammatory condition where excessive collagen (yellow) is deposited beneath the mucosal surface (top). Symptoms are watery diarrhoea and abdominal pain. The cause of the disease is unknown. There is no cure, but the symptoms can be controlled by anti-inflammatory drugs. Stained with Masson's trichrome. Magnification: x560 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
