Caption: Crested barbet (Trachyphonus vaillantii) on the ground. This omnivorous bird inhabits gardens and woodland thickets. It is a territorial bird and perches in trees uttering a loud unmusical trill. It is a solitary ground-foraging bird, feeding on insects if fruit are unavailable and also on snails by smashing them open against rocks. The crested barbet is found in southern Africa. Photographed in Kruger National Park, South Africa.
