Homer is thought to have been active at around the time of the 8th century BC, but little is known for certain about his life. Some scholars question whether one person wrote both the epic poems which which he is credited. The Iliad deals with the Trojan War between the Greeks and the inhabitants of Troy. The Odyssey tells of the travels of the Greek hero Odysseus as he returns home after the Trojan War. The Homeric Hymns, a series of poems praising the Greek gods, is also credited to Homer.
