Caption: Benfluorex tablets and packaging. This amphetamine drug, used to suppress appetite and lower lipids, was marketed under the brand name Mediator by the French pharmaceutical company Servier Laboratories. It was prescribed between 1976 and 2009 as a medication for diabetic patients. It was withdrawn in 2009 due to an increased risk of heart valve disease. A similar drug was withdrawn for similar reasons around a decade earlier. It is thought between 500 and 2000 people may have died as a result of using benfluorex drugs. In 2012, legal proceedings began in France against the company and its founder.
