Caption: Amazon female warriors. 19th-century artwork of three Amazons, a legendary tribe of fearsome female warriors described in Greek mythology. Their location varies between accounts, with some placing them in Anatolia (Asia Minor) and others placing them in Libya or near Scythia. Here, they are shown in Scythian attire, and on horseback like Scythian nomads. Their alliances and actions are described several times in Greek tales, including their participation in the Trojan War, and obtaining the girdle of their queen being one the Labours of Hercules. This woodcut dates from 1880.
