Caption: Brahma and Saraswati, Hindu gods, 19th-century artwork. Hinduism, the major religion of the Indian subcontinent, is an ancient faith with its origins dating back to Vedic traditions from the Iron Age. Brahma (left) is the Hindu god of creation, and Saraswati (right) is his consort. In Hindu legends, humans are descended from Brahma, who is traditionally depicted with four heads and four arms, as well as with prayer beads. Saraswati, here holding a sceptre, is considered a Mother Earth figure. This woodcut dates from 1880.
