Caption: Gladiator fight, Ancient Rome. 19th-century artwork of Roman gladiators fighting in an arena in Rome, Italy. The gladiator at centre has triumphed, and is holding a sword to his opponent's throat while looking to the crowd to see if the verdict will be death or a reprieve. A dead gladiator is at lower right. At left, another gladiator is using a trident against a grounded opponent armed with a dagger. In the background, other fights are in progress, with one dead body being dragged out of the arena. Gladiator fights, in arenas such as the Colosseum, reached their peak between the 1st century BC and the 2nd century AD. This woodcut dates from 1880.
