Caption: Execution of Girolamo Savonarola, 19th-century artwork. This burning at the stake took place on 23 May 1498, in the Piazza della Signoria, Florence, Italy. The Palazzo Vecchio (Florence town hall) is at upper right. The Italian priest and preacher Girolamo Savonarola (1452-1498) was a theological reformer who openly criticised the Catholic church for its vice and frivolity. In 1498 he was found guilty of heresy and seditious teaching and along with two other priests he was hanged over a fire (centre). This woodcut dates from 1870, and is a copy of an anonymous painting of 1498 that is held in the Museo di San Marco, Florence.
