Caption: Radish harvest. 19th-century artwork of workers harvesting radishes on a farm near the town of Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany. Farmers in this area of Germany cultivate a type of white radish that is a traditional food in Bavarian cuisine (such as white radish salad, or radishes eaten with beer). Radishes (Raphanus sativus) are root vegetables. Here, women are harvesting them from the ground (leafy tops across bottom) and gathering them in baskets, while children (upper right) are operating a pump (using a see-saw and a pulley) to provide water in which the radishes are being washed. This woodcut dates from 1871.
