Caption: Neuromusclar junction (NMJ). Light micrograph of motor neurons (nerves, black) attached to skeletal muscle (red), ending at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ, motor end plate, flattened areas). The NMJ is a specialised form of synapse, the junction between nerve cells. Nerve impulses trigger the release of chemical transmitters that cross the synaptic gap and trigger contraction of the muscle. This synaptic process occurs at the motor end plates in the muscle tissue.
