Caption: Conservation of mass experiment. Image 1 of 2. Digital scales showing the mass of a conical flask of copper (II) sulphate solution (blue) and a cup of iron filings, before mixing. When the two are mixed (see A500/702), a substitution reaction will occur and the iron filings will be coated with free copper from the solution and iron will move into solution. The mass shown by the balance will, however, be unchanged. This demonstrates that no mass has been lost in the reaction.
