When used in an electrical device, they convert chemical energy into electrical energy via a reaction between the zinc (Zn) and manganese dioxide (MnO2) contained within the outer metal casing seen here. They also contain the alkaline electrolyte potassium hydroxide (KOH). These are button-type batteries, typically used in watches and other small electrical devices.
