Caption: Lithium-ion rechargeable torch. This torch is designed to be recharged by being placed directly in its charger, rather than removing the battery for charging. The battery is a lithium-ion battery (LIB), with the first commercial batteries of this type being developed in the 1990s. The battery's electrolyte is a lithium salt in an organic solvent, and the electrical power is obtained as lithium ions move in this solvent between the positive and negative terminals. Here, this electrical voltage powers the light bulb in the torch. When placed in the charger, the flow of the ions in the battery is reversed, restoring the electric potential.
