Caption: Conservation of mass experiment. Image 2 of 2. Digital scales showing the mass of a conical flask, its contents, and an empty cup, after mixing of the contents. The cup contained iron filings (see A500/701), which have been added to the the copper (II) sulphate solution (blue) in the conical flask. A substitution reaction has occurred and the iron filings have become coated with copper from the solution, while iron has moved into solution. The mass shown by the balance is unchanged, however. This demonstrates that no mass has been lost in the reaction.
