Caption: Marchiafava-Bignami disease. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the brain of a 45-year-old chronic alcoholic, showing degeneration of the corpus callosum. The corpus callosum is a bundle of nerve fibres beneath the brain cortex. Marchiafava-Bignami disease is a progressive neurological disease characterised by corpus callosum demyelination and necrosis (cell death) and subsequent atrophy (wasting). It is classically associated with chronic alcoholics and sometimes nutritional deficiencies.
