Caption: Assorted tools, 16th-century artwork. At right is a geometrical measuring tool and set of dividers (upper right). At left is a filing tool and coiled metal strip (upper left). At centre is a machine bolt with a screw thread, above the threaded hole in which it will be placed. This is figure 1 from a book by the French inventor and mathematician Jacques Besson (circa 1540-1573). The Latin title of the book was 'Theatrum instrumentorum et machinarum' (Theatre of machines and instruments). It was originally published in around 1572. This engraving is from the 1582 edition, published in Lyon by the publisher Barthelemy Vincent.
