Caption: Handcart, 16th-century artwork. Man pulling a handcart (bottom) loaded with a full container. The framework of the handcart, with no load and no side-wheels, is at top, showing the single rear wheel and the two handles at the front used to pull it. This is figure 15 from a book by the French inventor and mathematician Jacques Besson (circa 1540-1573). The Latin title of the book was 'Theatrum instrumentorum et machinarum' (Theatre of machines and instruments). It was originally published in around 1572. This engraving is from the 1582 edition, published in Lyon by the publisher Barthelemy Vincent.
