Caption: Antarctic explorers. Scientists Oleg Sorokin (left) and Andrei Kapitsa, members of a 1964 expedition to the centre of Antarctica. Kapitsa used seismic soundings to measure the thickness of the Antarctic ice sheet. In doing so he discovered Lake Vostok, the first sub-glacial lake found on the continent.
