Caption: Hyperbaric chamber. A technician monitoring a patient who is inside an early design of hyperbaric, or compression, chamber. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is used to increase blood oxygen by using a pressurised environment and pure oxygen. At elevated pressures oxygen is dissolved in the plasma in addition to being taken up by red blood cells. HBOT is indicated in gas gangrene and carbon monoxide poisoning, as well as decompression sickness. Photographed at the Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery in Moscow, Russia, in 1973.
