Shown here are the Soviet Crew, commander Alexei Leonov (born 1934, centre right) and flight engineer Valeri Kubasov (1935-2014, far right), and two members of the US backup crew, commander Alan Bean (born 1932, centre left) and docking module pilot Jack Lousma (born 1936, far left). The ASTP mission flew on 15th July 1975, with the Apollo and Soyuz craft launching from their respective countries and docking in orbit. The Soyuz 19 craft returned to Earth on 21st July, the Apollo on 24th July. ASTP laid the foundation for future cooperative projects such as Shuttle/Mir and the International Space Station.
