Caption: Soyuz 19 rocket launch. Launch of the Soviet Soyuz 19 spacecraft carrying Soviet cosmonauts Alexei Leonov and Valeri Kubasov. Soyuz-19 was launched as part of a joint project between the USA and the USSR - the Apollo-Soyuz Test project (ASTP). It successfully docked with the American Apollo 18 spacecraft in orbit on 17th July 1975. The programme was intended to test a jointly-designed international docking mechanism. The US crew consisted of Thomas P. Stafford, Vance D. Brand and Donald K. Slayton. Photographed at Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhztan, on 15th July 1975.
