Caption: International mathematician's congress. Russian-Soviet mathematician Nikolai Luzin (1883-1950, first row third-left) among the participants of the international mathematician's congress in Vilnius, Lithuania. Luzin made major contributions to number theory, particularly by devising descriptive set theory. In 1936 he was criticised by the newspaper Pravda and accused of counter-revolutionary practices. Although Luzin was convicted of these trumped-up charges, he was never punished. He was formally acquitted posthumously in 2012.
