Caption: Optical maser. Optical maser, or 'quantum generator' as developed and produced by Russian physicists Nikolai Basov and Aleksandr Prokhorov. Masers are the microwaves produced by systems of energised (excited) atoms. Maser stands for Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. They also applied this technique to amplify light (the laser). Photographed at the Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases, Odessa, Ukraine.
