Caption: Nuclear explosion seismogram. Seismogram showing the effect of a nuclear explosion conducted at the Nevada nuclear testing site, USA, on 17th July 1986. A seismograph records the intensity of ground movements caused by seismic activity. Here the effect of the explosion can be seen as two peaks (centre) amongst much lower level activity. This seismogram was recorded at a seismic station near Karkaralinsk in the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic (now Kazakhstan).
