Caption: Satellite image sequence showing the development of The Perfect Storm , between 28th October and 4th November 1991. The storm developed as an eastward-moving cold front crossed the coast of New England, meeting a large high pressure area building over southeastern Canada. The cold front carried a low into the system, which rapidly intensified into a strong storm (seen by a spiral of cloud off the coast). This was further boosted by absorbing the remnant of hurricane Grace (spiral at centre at the start of the clip), which led to the formation of a small hurricane with a distinct cloud-free eye (visible just right of centre about seven seconds in to the clip). At its peak it had sustained winds of 120 kilometres per hour. The storm cost 13 lives and $200m of damage. A book and subsequent film named The Perfect Storm follow the six-man crew of the fishing ship Andrea Gail to their deaths in the storm.
