Taiwan (the Republic of China) lies 180 kilometres off the southeastern coast of China (the People's Republic of China, upper left) across the Taiwan Strait (blue, upper left). The East China Sea lies to the north, the Philippine Sea to the east, the Luzon Strait directly to the south and the South China Sea to the southwest. Other neighbouring states include Japan to the east and northeast, and the Philippines to the south. Image compiled from data acquired by the LANDSAT 5 and 7 satellites, in 2000.
