Caption: Artisan miner panning for gold. He has combined panned sediment with mercury (to bind the gold particles together) and is now draining off the mercury through a muslin cloth. He is working on the site of a mine that was shut in the 1960s. It is now used by artisan miners who extract the small deposits of gold that were left. Photographed in Macalder, Kenya.
