Caption: Northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) preening (grooming its feathers). This bird is found throughout temperate Europe and Asia, and is resident in western Europe. It migrates south in the winter. It reaches a length of 31 centimetres, with a wingspan of around 72 centimetres. It feeds mainly on insects and other small invertebrates. Photographed in June, in Scotland.
