Caption: Gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus), dark morph. Gyrfalcons are very large falcons that can reach 60 centimetres in length, weigh up to 1.4 kilograms, and have a wingspan of 130 centimetres. It mainly preys on birds such as ptarmigans and seabirds, but will also take mammals such as lemmings and hares. Several different colour morphs are possible. This one is the dark, as opposed to white morph. Photographed in June, in Scotland.
