Caption: Iliopsoas muscles. Computer artwork of an anterior (frontal) view of the hips, showing the inner hip muscles (red), the ilioposas. These are shown attached to the bones of the thighs (femurs), pelvis and spine. The psoas major muscles (one shown) attach to the transverse processes (hidden by muscle) of the vertebrae of the lumbar (lower) spine. They also attach to the femurs (thigh bones). The iliacus muscles attach to the ilium (ear-shaped hip bone) and the femur. These two muscle sets are the strongest of the hip flexor muscles, which are the muscles that act to pull the knee upwards.
