Caption: Timelapse footage of amateur astronomers at a Messier Marathon. This is an event in which binoculars and telescopes are used to locate as many Messier objects (such as galaxies, nebulae and star clusters) as possible in a given time. Messier objects are those catalogued by Charles Messier. The astronomers use red lights to illuminate the scene as long wavelengths do not affect the dark adaptation of the eye. Green laser pointers are used to highlight objects in the sky.
