Caption: Photograph of klystrons for the PETRA electron- positron accelerator at the DESY particle physics lab, Hamburg. Two klystrons are shown. Klystrons are electron tubes which are used to generate or amplify electromagnetic radiation in the microwave (short radio wave) region of the spectrum. At particle accelerators like PETRA they are used to generate extremely powerful pulses of radio frequency waves which are carried to the accelerator by light guides and there accelerate the particles travelling in the accelerator's beam pipe. (May '84)
