Fullerenes are a structural type (allotrope) of carbon with potential medical and nanotechnology uses. The mass is displayed as number of carbon atoms. The graphite was vaporised in a helium atmosphere, ionised and then analysed with a mass spectrometer. The two main peaks are C60 and C70 buckyballs (spherical fullerenes). There are also small peaks for various other fullerenes at different carbon numbers. This graph is based on an actual trace, with the lines smoothed for clarity.
