Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through the leaf of a black nightshade (Solanum nigrum) plant, showing palisade mesophyll cells (lower half) and epidermal cells (white, top). The palisade cells contain numerous chloroplasts (green, round). Chloroplasts are organelles found in plant cells. They contain the pigment chlorophyll and are the site of photosynthesis, the process that synthesises carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water using sunlight. Magnification: x670 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
