Hernia surgery. Surgical team lifting a patient from a hospital trolley onto an operating table, prior to laparascopic (keyhole) repair of a hernia. A hernia is the protrusion of the intestines through a weak area in the abdominal muscles. Keyhole surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that is directed using a laparascope, a type of endoscope that is inserted through a small incision into the patient's abdomen. It sends an image of the area being operated on to a monitor (upper centre) which the surgeon uses to guide the procedure.
