Caption: High endothelial venule. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a high endothelial venule (HEV). Venules are tiny veins that transport deoxygenated blood from the capillary beds to the veins. HEVs are specialised post-capillary venous swellings characterised by plump endothelial cells (purple) as opposed to the usual thinner endothelial cells found in regular venules. They enable lymphocytes (white blood cells) circulating in the blood to directly enter a lymph node. Magnification: x10,000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
