Caption

Ancient beech woodland. Pollarded beech (Fagus sylvatica) trees in an ancient woodland. Pollarding is a wood management technique in which all growth is removed from the tree above 2-3 metres at intervals of several years. This provides a supply of small wood, and has the incidental benefit of prolonging the lifespan of the tree. Photographed in Great Monk Wood, Epping Forest, England, UK, in early March.
