Walter Brattain (1902-1987). Portrait of the US physicist Walter Houser Brattain. Brattain is best known for inventing the transistor along with John Bardeen and William Shockley, and they shared the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics for their invention. Transistors are solid state switches found in nearly every electronic component today.
