Brattain Bardeen and Shockley. Portrait of the US physicists Walter Houser Brattain (1902-1987, left) John Bardeen (1908-1991, right) and William Bradford Shockley Jr (1910-1989, centre) in their laboratory. These men are best known for inventing the transistor and shared the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics for their invention. Transistors are solid state switches found in nearly every electronic component today.
