Caption: Fisheye view of the tunnel of the HERA collider at DESY, the German particle physics lab in Hamburg. HERA (Hadron- Electron Ring Accelerator) is a new type of machine which will collide 820 GeV protons (members of the hadron family of particles) with 30 GeV electrons. The tunnel is 6.3 km long. HERA is scheduled to start in 1989-1990. The picture shows one of the white superconducting magnets (left) through which the beam pipe for electrons passes. The beam pipe at right, with the blue focusing magnet, injects electrons into HERA from the PETRA accelerator which boosts them to high- energy initially. The proton beam pipe & magnet ring will be built on top of the electron ring.
