Caption: Particle tracks from a proton-proton collision seen by the LHCb (large hadron collider beauty) detector at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. Before the collision the ions had been accelerated by the large hadron collider (LHC). Parts of the detector are shown in white. The collision produced numerous particles (blue and purple lines). Blocks of colour show where the particles were detected and their energies recorded. The long purple line is a muon.
