Caption: Particle’s-eye view of particle tracks from a proton-proton collision in the ATLAS (a toroidal LHC apparatus) detector at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. Before the collision the ions had been accelerated by the large hadron collider (LHC). The collision produced numerous subatomic particles, one of which decayed into two photons (blue dotted lines). The photons have a neutral charge and so leave no tracks, but are revealed when they deposit energy (bright green lines) in one of the detector’s calorimeters.
