Caption: Insects of Surinam. 18th-century artwork showing a variety of insects on a plant. The insects include a stag beetle (Lucanus cervus, upper left), the South American palm weevil (Rhynchophorus palmarum, black) and other unrelated insects. This artwork is Plate 48 from 'Metamorphosibus Insectorum Surinamensium' (1705) by German nature illustrator Maria Sybilla Merian (1647-1717). Surinam (now called Suriname) is in northern South America.
